European Union plans to ban Americans because of Covid-19

The European Union plans to ban its territory from the Americans once it reopens its borders to countries outside the Schengen area on July 1, according to information revealed on Tuesday June 23 by the "New York Times".At issue: the Covid-19 pandemic, still virulent in a country with more than 2.3 million cases and 120,000 deaths.

The daily quotes two lists of countries whose nationals would be allowed to travel to Europe.Americans are currently excluded from both lists, according to the “New York Times.” Brazilian nationals and Russians are also considered too risky due to the spread of the virus and therefore "undesirable" for the EU.

According to the daily, European officials said it was highly unlikely that an exception would be made for the United States, but the country could be added later to the list, which will be revised every two weeks based on updated infection rate.

The European Union plans to reopen its external borders with third countries on July 1, provided that they meet certain health criteria, that the epidemiological situation is good and that the measure is reciprocal.

One list, which contains 47 countries, includes only countries with lower infection rates than the EU (16 new cases per 100,000 population); the second list includes 54 countries with slightly lower case rates.worse, up to 20 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Both lists allow for example visitors from China, as well as Uganda, Cuba and Vietnam.
